Marla Butke, Ph.D – Dalcroze Eurhythmics: Meaningful Movement in the General Music Classroom

This workshop will allow participants to experience the main components of Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Movement activities for grades K-8 that teach musical concepts focusing on rhythmic integrity and expressiveness will be presented. This approach also teaches concentration, self-control, social integration, and creativity. Assessment, piano improvisation, solfege, working in a limited space, and classroom management issues will also be addressed.
Marla Butke, Ph.D., directs the Women’s Chorale and teaches General Music and Choral Methods at Otterbein University, and teaches Choral Methods at Capital University in Ohio. Recently retired as full professor at Ashland University, she has also taught music education courses at Xavier University, The Ohio State University, and Ohio Wesleyan University. Dr. Butke previously taught choral and general music in middle and high schools in Ohio. She holds degrees from Miami University, Wright State University and The Ohio State University. She is a Master Teaching Artist with the American Eurhythmics Society and serves as the President of the board of AES. Dr. Butke regularly presents Dalcroze Eurhythmics workshops throughout the United States and internationally, including presentations in Shenzen, China, at the International Dalcroze Conference in Coventry, England, the Organization of American Kodaly Educators National Conference, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association National Conference, the National Association for Music Education Eastern Division Conference, the American Choral Directors Association National Conference and Central/North Central Regional Conference and Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Florida State Music Education Conferences. Dr. Butke was a contributing author to Women and Music in America Since 1900,and has been published in General Music Today, TRIAD,Update, The Orff Echo, andEnrollment Management.Her book, co-authored by Dr. David Frego, Meaningful Movement: A Music Teacher’s Guide to Dalcroze Eurhythmics, was recently released.
